A Technically Flawless Masterpiece
Arcane is based on the popular game League of Legends by Riot Games. In the game, players assume the roles of various pre-designed characters and battle each other in different arenas.
Despite the game having a relatively strong narrative background, it's not an RPG or an adventure game. Therefore, expectations for the series weren't particularly high, especially considering it was produced by Riot Games themselves.
The first trailers silenced all skeptics. The previews clearly showed that Arcane would be a visual and artistic marvel, which was indeed confirmed upon its release. In the world of TV series, Arcane stands unparalleled in this regard.
But stunning visuals alone aren't enough. A series needs a compelling story, and Riot Games' team did not disappoint in this area either.
Surprisingly Good Story
Thankfully, Arcane doesn't simply follow the game's storyline but forges its own path. It borrows only certain characters and the world from League of Legends. Both elements are executed exceptionally well in the series.
The creators wisely chose a prequel approach, making the series accessible to viewers unfamiliar with the game. However, Arcane is filled with references that League of Legends players will appreciate. Understanding the game is not necessary to enjoy the series.
The main protagonists are sisters Vi and Powder, who are forced to live in the impoverished Zaun, essentially a large underground slum of the flourishing city Piltover.
Zaun is rife with gangs, drugs, and other vices, while Piltover is its polar opposite. It's no surprise that the residents of Zaun and Piltover don't get along.
While the story focuses mainly on the sisterly duo, there are other noteworthy characters in Arcane. The gangster Silco, in particular, is an especially well-crafted character.
He isn't a typical one-dimensional villain. Silco has a seemingly noble goal but resorts to brutal methods to achieve it. Under different circumstances, he could even be seen as a protagonist.
Arcane features many such complex characters. The well-developed characters and solid storyline, combined with the series' technical excellence, are the main reasons to give Arcane a chance.
